The Background Story

Ragging (hazing) has taken at least 31 lives since the year 2000 in India (News Reported).  It has left many crippled for life . Probably millions has been abused physically, mentally and / or sexually which is often no less than planned, organized mass gang rape. Many are even  forcefully introduced to illicit drug abuse or such other dangerous behaviors.

Both boys and girls have been victimized by senior students in the pretext of  "introduction". Year after year this is going on with gross human rights abuse on innumerable freshmen in educational institutions across India (and in many other countries). Several lame excuses have been brainstormed by the handful of seniors, possibly perverts, who engage themselves in such ghastly acts in somewhat Abu Ghraib fashion.

Most of the victims have been silenced by the guilty with threat of more aggressive torture on them if they let outsiders know what is going on with them in the hostels. The authorities of the concerned institutions usually turn a blind eye or even in many instances they  shamelessly try to protect the guilty but not the innocent victims. The threat that prevails over the juniors prevent them to testify as witnesses if any of them brave to lodge a complaint or to report to the media.

Under this situation some scattered movements often occur inside the campuses to protest these organized criminals and their activities. But these movements are again throttled by those groups of seniors who also give rise to some of  their clan from the abused juniors... something like a Dracula story where the victim turns into a vampire himself/herself. But here only a handful of them victims are converted to "vampires" , a handful to protestors and most of them to mute spectators.

"Necessity is the mother of Invention"

To make any change on the social system or to eliminate some social evil, the movement must be well organized.

The SAVE is an effort by some conscientious people, from various parts of the society, to unify the discrete protests and organize the opponents of ragging, in order conduct the movement against ragging in a well-organized way.

Principles & Objectives

Principle

SAVE is against any kind of ragging. We are open to healthy & humane  interactions between the seniors & juniors.

Objectives

  •  Create a strong public mandate against ragging.

  •  Device alternative but healthy and humane modes of interaction between seniors & juniors.

  •  Unite the isolated protests against ragging under the umbrella of a strong , united movement.

  •  Involve the authorities, faculties,  students and others in the anti ragging drives.

Activities in order to achieve the objectives

Organizing seminars, essay competitions, debates etc. (in campus and also for others) to highlight the issue of this silent killer.

Organizing student cells inside the campuses of colleges, universities and other institutions affected by ragging. These student cells are to intervene to prevent ragging inside their campuses as well as they are to launch anti ragging propaganda inside their campuses.

Providing maximum possible help to the victims / relatives of the victims, through Medi-cell, Legal cell etc.

Maintaining a website, a database, a blog etc. to keep people informed and updated about the true, unmasked picture of ragging.

Setting up chapters across various cities & states so that maximum benefit may reach every corner of the country.

Publishing periodicals, Books etc on ragging to unveil the real and current situation.

Participation in various cultural and other festivals in order to spread the awareness.

We are open to new suggestions, ideas, etc. from well-wishers/members on adding new propagandas/strategies to this movement.
